Oil parfum is a different instrument from spray perfume — and it rewards a different technique. Apply it the way you would a spray and you will get a fraction of what the bottle can do. Apply it right, and one morning ritual carries you to dinner.
Step 1: Start with the right skin
Fragrance binds to skin that is clean, warm and slightly moisturised. The ideal moment is just after a shower, when pores are open. If your skin runs dry, a touch of unscented moisturiser first gives the oil something to hold onto — dry skin is the quiet killer of longevity.
Step 2: Dab on pulse points — one drop each
Pulse points are where blood vessels sit close to the skin, radiating warmth that diffuses scent all day: the inner wrists, the sides of the neck, behind the ears, the inner elbows. One drop on each is enough. Oil parfum is composed at extrait strength — a little travels far, and restraint is part of the luxury.
Step 3: Never rub your wrists together
This is the habit to unlearn. Rubbing generates friction heat that crushes the delicate top notes and collapses the fragrance pyramid before it has begun. Dab, press gently if you must — then leave it alone.
Step 4: Let it bloom
Give it 30–60 seconds. Oil parfum opens softly — the top notes greet first, the heart emerges over the first hour, and the base settles in for the long evening. It wears close to the skin: a scent people discover when they lean in, which is exactly the point.
Extra craft for special evenings
- Layer low and high: a drop at the ankles or behind the knees makes the scent rise as you move.
- Hair ends, not roots: a trace on the ends of dry hair leaves a trail — avoid the scalp.
- Fabric lingers longest: a discreet drop on a cuff or dupatta can outlast the day — test on an unseen corner first, as oils can mark delicate fabrics.
